Adding Video to Google Drawings

Video is a great tool to engage students, deliver step-by-step directions, and provide instructional content. It is great that we are able to add playable videos to Google Slides and Forms for students to view. Unfortunately that option in not available in other Google tools, such as Google Drawings.

Although Google Drawings does not have a built-in feature to insert videos, there is a creative work-around that can actually make this work! In short, you can copy and paste playable videos from Google Slides into Google Drawings.

Here's how:
  • First, create a Google Slideshow.
  • Insert your video onto a slide in the slideshow.
  • If you just want to play a portion of the video, set the start and stop time by right-clicking on the video and choosing "Video options".
  • Now create (or open) the Google Drawing you want to add the video to.
  • Copy the video from the Google Slideshow and paste it into your Google Drawing.
  • The video will play as normal in your Google Drawing by simply double-clicking on it.
This can be a great way to add videos to a Google Drawing template for directions or instructional content.
