Public NotebookLM with AI Policies, Guidelines and Frameworks

Over the last few years most schools around the world have been working on developing policies and guidelines that clarify how AI can and should be used by their students and educators, as well as which uses are prohibited or limited in a school setting.

If your school does not have AI guidelines yet, you are certainly not alone. Many districts are still digging into this task with committees and pilot groups and more.

Thankfully there are many organizations, states, and schools that have been blazing a trail in this area by developing and sharing their own AI policies, guidelines, and frameworks.

I recently collected over 40 of the best examples I have come across from states, schools, and organizations, and uploaded them all into a public notebook in NotebookLM.

See below for the link to access this shared Notebook and some directions on how you can interact with it to support you work on AI guidance for your school.

🔗 Access the Notebook

I have shared the notebook publicly so anyone is able to access it. The only requirements are:
  • You do need to have a Google account
  • Your Google account needs to be allowed to use NotebookLM
If you are using a personal Gmail account, then you are good to go. If you are using a school Google account, then your school does need to allow access to NotebookLM.

Here is the link to access my shared notebook - AI Guidance and Policies Notebook

📒 Notebook Layout

Once you access the notebook, you will see three columns:
  • Sources
  • Chat
  • Studio

📄 Sources

In the "Sources" panel you will find the 40+ files I uploaded into the Notebook. These are the AI policies, guidance docs, and frameworks from states, schools, and organizations.

If you want, you can click on any of the sources to see the original document and to get an AI summary of its content.

If you know of other valuable sources that should be added to the notebook, please share the information with me at ericcurts@gmail.com and I will be happy to review the content for possible inclusion in the notebook.

💬 Chat

In the "Chat" panel you can ask the AI any question you want related to the documents I have uploaded into the notebook.

The AI will only reference the documents in the notebook for the answers it provides you. If you want the notebook to only use certain sources, you can check and uncheck the sources in the "Sources" panel to select just the documents you wish to include in the conversation.

The chat tool is a great option for asking question such as:

Pedagogical & Teacher Support
  • Professional Development: "Based on these documents, what are the top five AI competencies every K-12 teacher should be trained on this year?"
  • Redesigning Assignments: "How do these documents suggest teachers should modify traditional homework assignments to remain 'AI-resilient' or 'AI-enhanced'?"
  • The 'Human' Element: "What specific classroom tasks do these frameworks recommend never be automated by AI?"
  • AI Literacy: "Synthesize a list of age-appropriate AI literacy goals for elementary, middle, and high school students based on these sources."
Ethics, Equity, & Accessibility
  • The Digital Divide: "What strategies do these documents propose to ensure students without home internet or premium AI subscriptions aren't left behind?"
  • Bias & Representation: "Create a checklist for a school's 'AI Review Committee' to use when evaluating a new AI tool for algorithmic bias."
  • Special Education: "How do these guidelines address the use of AI for students with IEPs or 504 plans? Are there specific protections or recommended uses?"
  • Human-in-the-loop: "What do these documents define as 'meaningful human oversight' in an educational context?"
Governance & Operations
  • Procurement: "Draft a list of 10 'must-ask' questions for our IT department to pose to AI software vendors before we sign a contract."
  • Policy Evolution: "How often do these documents recommend that AI policies be reviewed and updated to keep pace with the technology?"
  • Standardization: "What are the most common 'Levels of AI Use' (e.g., from 'No AI' to 'Full AI') defined across these documents? Create a unified scale I can use for my school."
  • Disciplinary Actions: "How do these frameworks suggest handling 'accidental' vs. 'intentional' AI policy violations by students?"
Stakeholder Communication
  • For Parents: "Draft a FAQ for parents explaining why our school is allowing AI use, addressing concerns about data safety and 'losing the ability to think critically.'"
  • For Students: "Create a 'Student Bill of Rights and Responsibilities' regarding AI use, written in student-friendly language for a high school handbook."
  • For the School Board: "Summarize the 'Top 3 Risks' and 'Top 3 Opportunities' mentioned across all documents to present at a board meeting."
Comparative & "Power" Prompts
  • Consensus vs. Outliers: "On which topic is there the most agreement across these 40 documents, and which topic shows the most disagreement or variety of opinion?"
  • The 'State of the Art': "Identify the most recent document in this collection. What does it address that the older documents seem to have missed?"
  • Gap Analysis: "After analyzing all documents, is there a critical area of AI implementation that seems under-addressed or missing entirely?"
  • Action Plan: "Based on the best practices in this notebook, create a 12-month roadmap for a school district just beginning its AI integration journey."

🔊 Studio

In the "Studio" panel you can access any of the content I have created previously in the notebook. This includes:
  • Custom Reports - on a wide range of AI topics
  • Mindmap - to allow you to browse through the content and get summaries on any topic you select
  • Audio Overviews - audio summaries of the content for those who learn well by listening
  • Infographics - for helpful visual representations of the content
I plan on generating more studio content over time, so the list of resources will continue to grow. Please feel free to suggest studio content you would like me to generate and include for everyone to access.
