So what is Google Save? In short it is an option to save and organize images or websites in an online collection.
Of course we already have Google options for both of these tasks. For example, you can already save online images to your Google Drive with the Save to Google Drive extension, and you can save images to your Google Photos with the Clip It Good extension. And of course you can save websites by simply bookmarking them in Chrome.
It is not exactly clear how Google Save will supplement or change or work with or replace any of these already existing options. For now though it is another option that you may find useful and at least is worth taking a closer look at.
So, see below for an overview of how to access and use Google Save…
Accessing the Google Save collection
The Google Save website can be accessed at:
https://www.google.com/save
If you have not used the service before, you will be greeted with a window explaining the tool as follows:
“Your new home for saved images and links - Images you save in Google Image Search live here at google.com/save. Website links you save with the Save to Google extension for Chrome can also be found here. Tag your saved images and links to easily find them and stay organized.”
Once you add some images or links to Google Save, they will show up here.
Adding Images to Google Save
You can add images to Google Save through the Google Images search site at:
https://images.google.com
Note: This works on mobile as well as on desktop Chrome.
- First, search for an image as normal.
- Then click on the image you want.
- You will now see the image and several buttons including “Visit page”, “View image”, “Save”, and “View saved”
- Click the “Save” button to add the image to your Google Save collection.
- Click the “View saved” button if you want to go to your Google Save collection.
Adding Websites to Google Save
To add sites to Google Save you first need to install the “Save to Google” Chrome extension. You can find the extension in the Chrome Web Store, or simply use this link:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/save-to-google/meoeeoaohbmgbocpdpnjklmfmjjagkkf
After you click “Add to Chrome” the extension will be installed and will be available in the top right corner of your Chrome browser.
Now to save a website to Google Save do the following
- Visit the website as normal.
- Click the “Save to Google” extension in the top right corner of Chrome.
- The site will now be added to your Google Save collection.
- If you want you can click the “+ Add a tag” button to tag the site.
- You can also click “View Saves” if you want to go to your Google Save collection.
Managing your Google Save images and sites
Once you start saving images and sites to Google Save, you can access them:
- At the site: https://www.google.com/save
- Through the “View Saves” button in Google Images
- By right-clicking on the “Save to Google” extension and choosing “View Saves”
You can manage your saves by adding tags to them.
- Click in the top right of the thumbnails for the saved images or sites you want to tag.
- This will select the items as a batch.
- Now click the tag button in the top right of the page to type in a tag for the items
- If you have previously created tags, you can also choose from an existing tag.
- As you tag items you can then click the tag icon on the left side of the page to view your tagged collections.
Conclusion
As I mentioned before, I am not sure exactly where Google Save will fit into and play along with other saving options such as bookmarks, Google Drive, and Google Photos. However, I am interested to keep playing with the service and find out. If nothing else, this is one more option for students to collect and organize images and web links for projects or assignments they are working on.
If you have any ideas, feel free to share them in the comments below.
This is fabulous! The website save extension worked perfectly. Sadly,I am not seeing the option to save an image when in Google Images, maybe it is a slow rollout.
ReplyDeleteIt works in my personal account but not my GAFE account.
DeleteCurrently the image save option is working on my GAFE account, but I have our domain set to rapid release, so perhaps it is still rolling out to apps domains that are on scheduled release.
DeleteAre there any indications if "Google Save" will be able to host images for the web?
DeleteIt looks like it is just linking to the images, not actually saving them, but I will need to test that out.
DeleteI cannot reach the site on my personal or my GAFE account. :(
ReplyDeleteIt finally arrived!!! :)
DeleteThanks Eric!!! This my first "SAVE"! However - my extensions are growing exponentially - do you use an extension manager? If so, what do you prefer?
ReplyDeleteYes, I use Extensions Manager here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/extensions-manager-aka-sw/lpleipinonnoibneeejgjnoeekmbopbc
DeleteI saw it show up last week on my school account and thought it was cool as well. I also envisioned it as a useful tool for students to collect or organize images for a project. It would be great if the image source was cited there.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I would use the save web page part though - bookmarks (the original version, not the new one) suit me fine
I am interested to see what comes from this
I'm very firmly with you on the old version bookmarks. The new one is really bad!
DeleteSave could be an awesome tool for collecting images for projects or when creating blogs or websites.
Thanks for sharing, Eric, I was checking this out, I don't have the Save/View Saved button options in Google Images as your post shares. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteLyn, it looks like this still rolling out to some people. I have it on my personal and GAFE accounts, but some folks do not see it yet, especially on GAFE accounts.
DeleteIs this Google's new attempt at updating the Chrome bookmark manager? That was a total flop when they tried it 12-18 months ago.
