EdTech Cool Tool - Khanmigo

This post is Day 23 of my "Cool Tools 2023" series where we are exploring some of the year's best tools for teaching and learning.

This year we are focusing on artificial intelligence tools and how they can be used in schools.

You can access all of the cool tools in the series as they come out at bit.ly/cool-tools-23 and in this Google Slideshow.

For this entry in the series we are taking a look at: Khanmigo

See below for details, directions, uses, and links for this artificial intelligence resource. If you have used this tool, please consider sharing your experiences, how you have used it, tips, tricks, and more.

🎓 Khanmigo

khanacademy.org/khan-labs

Khanmigo is an AI-powered virtual tutor and assistant for students and educators. Khanmigo can:
  • Help students with any Khan Academy course they are taking by providing support and explanations for any content in the class.
  • Be used with students as a set of stand-alone AI tools for tutoring, writing, debating, chatting, and more.
  • Also be used by teachers to create instructional content, assess student needs, and more.

Here is how Khanmigo works...

🧒 Student Use

Students can use Khanmigo while working through any Khan Academy course, or from the "AI Activities" page.

To use Khanmigo while working through a course:
  • Simply click on the Khanmigo icon on the page.
  • This will open the Khanmigo chat window.
  • Here the student can ask questions and get help from Khanmigo related to the content they are learning.
  • Khanmigo is trained to help the student work through the content and not simply give the answers to the problems.

To use Khanmigo outside of a specific course:
  • Start by clicking on "AI Activities" at the top of the page.
  • This will take you to a page with a collection of stand-alone AI tools that the student can use.
  • See below for details on some of the AI tools.

Tutor Me
  • Here the AI will help students with math, science and humanities questions.
  • The AI won’t do the work for the student, but will help them learn how to solve them on their own.
  • Students can type or copy and paste in the problem or exercise they would like to solve.

Practice my Knowledge
  • Here the AI will help practice and build knowledge in the subjects the student chooses by working through rounds of ten questions at a time.
  • The student can select a grade level and subject to begin.

Essay Feedback
  • Here the AI will provide feedback on student writing.
  • The student chooses their grade level, the essay type, and any essay instructions that came with their assignment.
  • The student then pastes in their essay and the AI provides customized feedback on how it can be improved.

Craft a Story
  • Here the AI will help the student write a story.
  • The student can choose a topic from the list provided, or they can type in their own idea for a story.

Debate
  • Here the AI will engage with the student in a debate on a topic.
  • There is a debate tool for Elementary, Middle School, and High Schools, each with its own set up debate topics specific for those grade levels.
  • The student will select a topic and a side, and will then talk about how they feel about the topic, supporting their opinions with facts and evidence.

Chat with a Literary Character
  • Here the AI will take on the role of a literary character.
  • The student can then chat with them and ask questions to learn from and about that character.

Chat with a Historical Figure
  • Here the AI will take on the role of a historical figure.
  • The student can then chat with them and ask questions to learn from and about that person.

Ignite Curiosity
  • Here the AI will help the student learn about any topic they are interested in.
  • The student can select from a list of topics, or they can simply type in what they would like to learn more about.

👩‍🏫 Teacher Use

As a teacher you also have access to a collection of AI-powered tools from Khanmigo to help you. On the same "AI Activities" page you will find tools including the following...

  • Summarize Student Chat History - To provide the top topics that were discussed, a list of students with conversations that were flagged as inappropriate, and answer specific questions about your students' chat history
Teacher Tools:
  • Refresh My Knowledge - Learn anything to prepare for teaching
  • Create a Lesson Plan
  • Create a Lesson Hook
  • Write Learning Objectives
