EdTech Cool Tool - Brisk

This post is Day 6 of my "Cool Tools 2023" series where we are exploring some of the year's best tools for teaching and learning.

This year we are focusing on artificial intelligence tools and how they can be used in schools.

💨 Brisk Teaching

Brisk Teaching is a free Chrome extension that uses AI to assist with multiple tasks including changing the reading level of a website or document, generate feedback for student work, generate lesson plans, quizzes, and exemplars, and help detect AI usage in writing projects.

Here are details on each of these features:

Change Reading Level
  • When on a webpage, click on the Brisk icon.
  • When in a Google Doc, click on the Brisk icon and choose "Change Level".
  • In both cases you will now see the estimated reading level of the text.
  • Choose the new reading level for the text.
  • Optionally choose a new language for the text.
  • Click "Change reading level" when done.
  • Brisk will now create a new Google Doc and generate the releveled text.




Give Feedback
  • Click on the Brisk icon when in a Google Document.
  • Choose "Give Feedback".
  • Enter what you want the feedback to focus on.
  • Optionally upload a rubric.
  • Choose the grade level for the writing.
  • Click "Brisk It".
  • Brisk will now generate feedback including "Glow" for positives, "Grow" for areas of concerns, and "Wondering" for ideas for improvement.
  • You can copy any of the feedback to use however you wish.



Create Content
  • When in a Google Doc, click on the Brisk icon.
  • Choose "Write with Brisk" from the menu.
  • Choose the item you want to create including resource, exemplar, quiz, or lesson plan.
  • Enter details describing what should be created (prompt, topic, etc.)
  • Choose the grade level and any other options specific to the content type.
  • Click "Brisk It" when done.
  • Brisk will now generate the content inside of the current Google Doc.



Detect AI Writing
  • When in a Google Doc, click on the Brisk icon.
  • Choose "Detect AI Writing" from the menu.
  • Brisk will now indicate how many minutes were spent writing the document.
  • Brisk will also give a likelihood of AI writing being present.
